MEET THE ARTIST
Amal AFOUSSI is a Montreal-based artist from Morocco, with a background in biology and biochemistry from the University of Montreal and Concordia University. Her journey from the sciences to the arts began in 2009, when she embraced her true passion for fine art, simultaneously refining her skills in makeup artistry. Over time, her creative exploration grew, extending into the transformative realms of color and form, and eventually into hair color artistry.

Afoussi is deeply inspired by the unseen threads that connect all living beings to each other, to the environment, and to the vast cosmos. Her work serves as a meditation on these invisible forces, mapping the intricate relationships that bind humanity, nature, and the universe. Through ethereal topographic landscapes, she captures the fluid dance of interconnectedness, inviting the viewer to reflect on the profound unity that exists across all realms of existence.
Her art bridges the microscopic and the cosmic, drawing from her scientific background to recreate the foundational elements of nature. The organic forms she creates often echo microorganisms found in the body or ocean, or the intricate patterns of cellular mitosis. These intimate glimpses into life’s smallest building blocks speak to the cyclical and mirrored relationship between our inner worlds and the vast outer universe.
Afoussi’s technique is a rich, multi-layered process, where natural materials and pigments come together to form textured, tactile compositions. She weaves together re-harvested copper cinder, sand, crystals, resin, inks, and acrylics, creating depth and resonance with each layer. Topographic lines and organic shapes guide the viewer’s eye across the canvas, enhancing the sense of interconnectedness that flows throughout her work. Each painting invites the viewer to step deeper into a world where the natural and cosmic realms are intertwined, offering an immersive experience that reveals the profound unity of all things.
